Thursday: September 1st

Shortly:

The day started with driving to Downtown and taking a look at the Disney Concert Hall and afterwards at the `Charmed´ house (from the TV series)
At noon we had an appointment with Imaginary Forces (they make screen art)
In the afternoon we visited a company (Renegade Effects) which makes models, and swords and costumes and ships

and I had Darth Mauls light sabre in my hands
and Vader’s helmet

and I have photos from his sabre
and from Darth Mauls droid (the black sphere)

and I saw the gladiator armour and a mini falcon ... and I let it fly

I have photos as proof

All in all it was a great company

The head of it is stunt double in many films and worked on Star Trek as Klingon

Furthermore E.T. is my best friend now

and a bit longer:

IN WHICH MAGS WOKE UP AND WAS IN PARADISE

The day started around 7.30 am for me and the night was horrible. I were more awake then asleep. I took in the morning a cold and refreshing shower and felt better afterwards. Afterwards Astrid, who managed to sleep even longer then I, headed down for breakfast.
At 9.00 am we left toward Downtown to see the Disney Concert Hall. It took us, all architecture students, an hour to go around it.

Around noon we had an appointment with the company Imaginary Forces (www.imaginaryforces.com). They worked on movies and ads. Afterwards we had a bit time and had lunch at a burgershop.
At 3.00 pm there was another appointment with the company Renegade Effects (www.renegadeeffects.com). The people there were working on requisits and armours for films. It was like heaven there only better.

After nearly 3 ½ hours there we had to leave because of the last appointment this day. It was not a company but a school teaching 3D Animation and renderings. (www.gnomon3d.com). After Renegade Effects it was rather boring.
Around 9.00 pm we were back in the hotel and watched for a while TV before we went to bed.

Wednesday: August 31st

Shortly:

the second day started early
we had an appointment with a special effects company (Ring of Fire) but before we went for breakfast
wasn't that great (both breakfast and the company ;)
at noon we were at the beach … w00t
in the afternoon we had an appointment with Pixar Magic and in the late afternoon we drove up in the hills, that was superb
the view over L.A. was breathtaking

and a bit longer:

IN WHICH PEANUT BUTTER WAS TRIED

The day started around 8.00 am after a hard night. Astrid and I were the last one in the room and we hurried to get finished and then we joined the others downstairs for breakfast. I had a slice of toast with peanut butter … my first try of this stuff. Ro was right … you had to fight this stuff with coffee before it glued your teeth together. But it was great.
Arnold, still hungry decided that we all should get a proper breakfast and so we travelled to Mel’s Dinner on the Sunset Blvd. I ordered myself buttermilk pancakes with syrup and coffee. Woot for the coffee … the mud got never empty.

Afterwards we had an appointment with the company Ring of Fire (www.ringoffire.com ). It was a rather small company and they showed us some of their demo reels and some work they had at this time. It was okay but rather hard to understand on the first day with English spoken.
When the tour was over we had some time left till the next appointment and it was decided that we would head to the beach. We drove down Santa Monica Blvd till we hit the ocean. It wasn’t far to the Santa Monica Pier.

Astrid, Lucy and I decided to head to the water and so we waded barefooted through the hot sand. I managed it to get my trousers wet, that was rather annoying. When we met with the group one hour later again the trousers were still wet.
At 2.00 pm the group arrived at the company Pixel Magic (www.pixelmagicfx.com). The tour took nearly one hour. Afterwards the group drove up the Mulholland Drive toward the Hollywood Hills. Soon they found a view point over the city.

We had dinner later at Carl's Jr.
When we got back to the hotel I fell asleep all too soon.

my diary for the california trip:

first parts:

Tuesday: August, 30th

Shortly:

8.00 am: Meeting at the airport
10.10 am: departure to Paris
14.30 pm: departure to L.A.
I was squeezed between two people during the flight so I couldn't stand up
In L.A. was the weather hot and sunny and great
and we arrived two hours late .. grrr.. ;)
around 8.00 pm (L.A. time) we arrived in the hotel and I went straight to bed (nearly)

and a bit longer:

IN WHICH THE JOURNEY BEGAN

All started in May when I saw at the university a placard announcing a trip to California. First I wasn't really sure about going on this trip but talking with a friend convinced me that it would be the right thing to do. I talked with Astrid, a dear friend from university, and she decided after a talk with her parents to go on this trip too. I have to admit I was rather happy to hear that she would go too because alone with strangers I wouldn't be that comfortable. We were lucky because we got the last two places for the trip.
After some meetings with the group in Vienna all were settled and soon the big day, 30th August arrived.
The night before I left, there was more or less a good bye party going on on YIM, AIM and MSN. I was rather confused with all those conversations going on. I saw Swanny in the morning online shortly before I left. In a hurry she gave me her phone number so that I could call her as soon as I would be in Las Vegas, her home town.
The group met at 8.00 am in the hall of the Vienna airport. All of us were a bit nervous about the flight because it was so long. At this day I didn’t know any of the group except Astrid. At the airport was the first group picture taken (Photo 1/ will be added as soon as I get it).
After the check in some were heading to the nearest café to drink something before the departure. At 10.10 the plane left from the airport and the first destination was Paris. The flight was late and so they had to head in a hurry to the departure gate. A flight attendant led the way and so they found their way easily. After only a few minutes they were sitting in the plane but still they had to wait because some passengers were missing. And then it was time use for the plane to speed up and I was nervous about the flight much more then ever before. During the flight I was so unfortunate to be squeezed between two people I didn’t know and they were sleeping all the time so I couldn’t stand up.
After eleven hours squeezed in this tiny seat the end was near, the plane landed at the Los Angeles International Airport (located in Long Beach). Because of the time difference it was only midafternoon and I was more than tired but the day wasn’t over yet.
It took like forever until the plane was empty enough to leave it because I was sitting in one of the last rows. Then I had to endure the journey in procedure with fingerprints taken and photo taken. Majit and Elham, two members of the group were from Iran with a visa for the USA, were taken to a separate room for a security check. Meanwhile the others and I waited for our luggage. It took nearly one and a half hours until the two were back. Arnold, our group leader, had booked a rental car and so we headed to the place where we could rent it.
The car was large enough to fit twelve people … the luggage was another matter. It was squeezed under the seats and into the back. Then we all sat down in the car and the journey to the hotel in West Hollywood started. During the trip so much new stuff we all saw, so many things were different from the rather cold weather in Austria. Palms could be spotted everywhere, houses were built in unexpected ways. Los Angeles is a million citizen city and still the houses only have two or three levels. Vienna, much smaller then Los Angeles, has so many more high buildings and not so many houses.
After nearly one hour we reached the Hotel Orbit. We carried our luggage in and checked in. We had 4 bed-rooms. Our couples, Claudia/ Josef and Majit/ Elham, shared one, Astrid, Claudia, Lucy and me got one, and the last one was for Arnold, Martin, Jürgen and Robert.
(I may get a pic of the room)
I had thought the day was over but I was wrong. Arnold decided that we had to go out for dinner. He also had already picked a local or rather a `drive thru´ kinda sort of thingy called Pink’s. We walked there for forever or so it seemed to me since I was already up for more than 26 hours. Then we reached the hot dog stand and there were like thousands of people already waiting in a row. I and Lucy decided to head back to the hotel since it seemed that we would wait for at least one hour.
When we reached the hotel I fell asleep in an instant.
